Summary
In this dual biography, Alexander (history, George Washington U.) tells the story of William Henry Hunt (d. 1951) and Ida Alexander Gibbs (1862-1957), who married in 1904. As they both had mixed-race backgrounds, they were classified as Negroes and treated as inferior in America during this time, yet they thrived internationally, as Hunt was in the foreign service in Paris, Madagascar, and other posts, and Gibbs ran in circles with influential African Americans like Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington, advocated against race and gender inequities, and participated in W.E.B. Du Bois's Pan-African Congresses. Alexander addresses the impact of race in their lives, and class, gender, place, and their family backgrounds. Annotation ♭2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
