Summary
Thomas Hardy is best known for his celebrated novels and influential poetry, but he also completed an epic drama that remains one of the more intriguing works of his career. Published in three parts in from 1904 to 1908, "The Dynasts" is a sweeping work that covers the Napoleonic Wars from Napoleon's 1805 coronation ceremony in Milan to his 1815 defeat at the Battle of Waterloo. Though Hardy considered "The Dynasts" his magnum opus, it received little attention upon its release, attracting only scattered praise and recognition. A 1912 article in the "North American Review," for instance, attributed the critical silence to "a tendency in our age...to leave to the future the discovery of our masterpieces." Nonetheless, "The Dynasts" provides fascinating insight into Hardy's worldview and is also recognized for pioneering techniques that would later become characteristic of Modernist literature
