Summary
Former author and newspaper reporter, Jim Qwilleran, who has been taking lesser jobs and even been unemployed for a long time, is interviewing for a job at the Daily Fluxion city newspaper. Offered a starting job in the Feature Department, he is assigned the position of art writer. In desperate need of employment, he accepts and immediately is told to do a story about an artist, Cal Halapay, who was badly reviewed by the other Fluxion art critic, George Bonifield Mountclemens. Halapay has been furious with the Fluxion ever since and is trying to get even. As Qwilleran begins meeting artists in the city, he senses strange undercurrents among the so-called modern art set. After Qwilleran moves into an apartment downstairs of Mountclemens, he finds an ally in Koko, his landlord's Siamese cat. And when vandalized paintings, accidents, and murder occur, Qwilleran and Koko together solve the puzzle
