Summary
All manner of folks journeyed West determined to make a new life for themselves. The greenest greenhorn on a cattle ranch was usually a fresh-faced kid, a "maverick" cut loose from his kin for one reason or another. On the Circle L Ranch one autumn, the ramrod hired such a kid to work as a wrangler by day and a night hawk after sundown. Not so much mean and lean as just skin and bones, the kid was wound as tightly as a watch spring
