Summary
It's December 1962, and college junior Karen Kern is in Manhattan to attend a party given by her best friend. Though she is engaged, Karen meets a young Harvard law student at the party, and he offers to help her find a cab home at the end of the evening. When they can't find a cab and start walking through Central Park, the man viciously rapes and beats her and leaves her for dead. Since it's the 60's, nothing is done about the crime. Her mother makes her tell everyone that she was the victim of a hit-and-run driverConsequently, Karen receives no counseling and is made to believe that the attack was somehow her fault. Her engagement is broken, and Karen must make plans for a life other than what she assumed would be hers. Until her thirties, she lives alone. Then she reluctantly forms a relationship with a widower, who has three young daughters. They decide to marry, even though they agree it will be a marriage of convenience and companionship only. The relationship does bloom somewhat and years go by when Karen finally sees her attacker again. He's a California senator who is being groomed for the presidency. How can she allow this sick man to become the president of the United States? But what can she do to stop him? Readers may also want to try the issue-oriented novels by Barbara Wood and Rona Jaffe.
