Summary
This biography of Captain Michael A. Healy (1839-1904) traces his life and career in the US Revenue Cutter Service, from his childhood, when his parents sent him north to escape slavery, to passing for white and becoming a sailor. The authors describe how, as a captain in the Cutter Service in Alaska and the Pacific, he enforced federal laws, provided search and rescue for sailors, brought medical aid to isolated villages, and was concerned for the fate of Eskimos. They also provide a general overview of the US Revenue Cutter Service. Healy gained a reputation as hard-drinking, which led to one of two trials for drunkenness and other charges. Noble, a writer who has served in the US Coast Guard, has a Ph.D. in history. Strobridge has been a historian for several government agencies.
